Edification: Born in the Philippians and he still speaks fluent Tagalog! Given the choice to become a priest or a doctor, Dr. DeGuzman became a surgeon and moved to the United States where he got involved in competitive cycling. In 1989, 17 years into his surgical practice, he was racing at 50 miles per hour when he collided head on with a car. He had traumatic injuries and due to his not being able to work, his income stopped; but his overheads continued. After working for 31 years as a surgeon, he had no residual income, and was dealing with crippling arthritis and serious pain due to his accident.
